The Space Between The Base

What started as something personal grew into a body of work shaped by countless hours in my NUM SOUND studio, figuring it out one track at a time.

Over the years, I’ve received endless requests for remixes I made for various labels—work originally released on vinyl and, in many cases, now almost impossible to find. So I went back into the vault, remastered the archive, and brought it back here.

Spanning 1992 to today, Hani Music Vault is a collection of remixes, edits and mashups made for DJs, separate from my Soterios Records releases. Much of this material was never made available on streaming platforms. From time to time, I’ll also drop advance promos from what’s coming next on Soterios.

It all began with this SADE Remix. In 1995, with barely any studio skills and hardly any remix experience, I took a wild shot at remixing Sade’s “I Never Thought I’d See The Day.” Somehow, the vibe clicked — the vocals, Stuart Mathewman’s melodies, the whole atmosphere. I worked on it for three weeks in late ’94 and quietly shared it with a few friends… including Frankie Knuckles, who started playing it on radio long before anyone knew what it was, and Louie Vega, who ran it heavy at Sound Factory Bar. Then, out of nowhere, a mysterious Musk Men bootleg appeared in March ’95. I had no idea it was coming — suddenly I’m in Miami for WMC and hearing my mix everywhere: clubs, events, even on the taxi radio back to the airport. That moment changed everything; this unauthorized remix became one of my most recognized works. Today, I’m celebrating 30 years of this classic with a brand-new 2025 ReMaster — cleaner, punchier, phase-aligned, time-corrected. This 30th anniversary release includes: 2025 ReMaster Original 1995 Mix First Demo Mix Respect to the pioneers who championed it early: Louie Vega, Frankie Knuckles, Danny Tenaglia, Hex Hector, Johnny Vicious, DJ Disciple, Danny Krivit & John Digweed. A timeless remix, reborn for a new era. Enjoy.

Detroit groove meets deep soul. Claude VonStroke’s “Who’s Afraid Of Detroit?” collides with Leela James’ “My Joy” — the raw, stripped-down production against Leela’s powerful, soulful vocal. Two records from completely different worlds, brought together into one unexpected blend. Hani Hybrid Blend.

Fiona Apple’s “Horns Of A Bull” has been growing on me ever since it started appearing as the opening song for Apple TV+’s LUCKY. I wanted to hear where it would go over a proper dancefloor groove, so I gave it a try with one of this year’s solid deep house cuts — Mita Gami’s “All By Myself.” The two somehow clicked. Dark, hypnotic and a little unexpected.

A late-night blend of three undeniable '90s dancefloor staples: Jaydee's "Plastic Dreams," Dawn Penn's "You Don't Love Me," and the legendary "Voodoo Drums" by Kraze. This one had been sitting on my hard drive for years, getting shelved every time another project came along. It finally felt like the right time to finish it and let it loose.

This song was brought to me by the original writer & producer Phillip Damien back in 1997 to turn it into a club anthem. We locked ourselves in my NUM SOUND studio and worked on it for three days. Soon after, the mix circulated around New York and became one of those records that kept finding its way into DJ sets, eventually making its way onto Rising High Records and Jonathan Peters’ Last Dance Classics. Taken from a live recording in 1983. Prince here takes on his old school blues character to deliver an incredible vocal performance on the Piano. Time Correcting each bar to a grid was not easy but thanx to his foot stomping it acted as the click track i needed. My approach was to add suitable drums & to leave the song intact. I added bits of his interview with Larry King at the top for extra perspective.

After Frankie Knuckles played my SADE “Pearls & Headphones” mashup, he asked if I could make a private mashup of his classic “Your Love” with Jamie Principle for his arsenal. I was delighted to take on the task. Two weeks later, I presented him with my mashup. I chose Chus & Ceballos’ “Back To New York” as the foundation because the title and the track carried a deeper meaning for Frankie and his story. After his passing, so many tastemakers and DJs requested this version. It became clear to me that I should finally make it available here on my site.

Underworld Vs. Pink Floyd - Brown Acid (Hani & JP Mix) The Big Dark mash-up from 1997 was made famous by Jonathan Peters at the Sound Factory, nyc. JP suggested to me to work together on remixing "Comfortably NUMB" by Pink Floyd. We took his idea even further by Mashing it up with a big track at the time "Born Slipy" by Underworld. In 1996, the head of Easy Street Records asked me to rework De’Lacy’s new song “That Look” after hearing my remix of “Hideaway” for DMC. He sent me the vocal parts only—I hadn’t heard the original and didn’t even know what key it was in.

I spent three weeks building the track from scratch. I made a cassette demo and took it to Winter Music Conference ’96. On the way to the airport, I played it for my friend Michael McDavid on my Sony Walkman. He loved it and kept repeating the hook the entire way. That’s when I knew I had something special.

Back in New York, I gave a DAT copy to Junior Vasquez at the Tunnel. Johnny Vicious soon asked to do his own edit with Tom Moulton. Within weeks, the record was creating serious buzz around New York.

Then the calls started coming from Europe. My attorney at the time, Kurosh Nassery, told me that labels including DeConstruction in the UK were interested. Easy Street eventually offered me a producer point and a remixer fee, recognizing that my remix had helped create the momentum.

The story behind “Sister Moon” was similar to my first Sade remix. I wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing yet, but somehow, everything clicked. Louie Vega played it religiously at his Sound Factory nights, and the buzz was massive. My phone wouldn’t stop ringing, with DJs from all corners of the scene contacting me directly to get their hands on the mix. Several influential New York tastemakers helped spread it through the scene, with copies circulating on DAT (Digital Audio Tape). Within weeks, it surfaced as a white-label bootleg on the walls of record shops across New York City and London. Soon after, I went on to remix Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song,” which exploded internationally and sent my name buzzing through the industry. Roger Sanchez was a supporter of my Sting remix, and his friend Simon Dunmore was launching a dance label with A&M Records, Sting’s label. A few months later, the remix was picked up by A&M. What began as an experiment ended up becoming an official release.
