SISTER MOON
STING
The story behind “Sister Moon” was similar to my first Sade remix. I wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing yet, but somehow, everything clicked. Louie Vega played it religiously at his Sound Factory nights, and the buzz was massive. My phone wouldn’t stop ringing, with DJs from all corners of the scene contacting me directly to get their hands on the mix. Several influential New York tastemakers helped spread it through the scene, with copies circulating on DAT (Digital Audio Tape). Within weeks, it surfaced as a white-label bootleg on the walls of record shops across New York City and London. Soon after, I went on to remix Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song,” which exploded internationally and sent my name buzzing through the industry. Roger Sanchez was a supporter of my Sting remix, and his friend Simon Dunmore was launching a dance label with A&M Records, Sting’s label. A few months later, the remix was picked up by A&M. What began as an experiment ended up becoming an official release.
